Blocked drains Hills District

The Hills District is a mix — older homes in places like Beecroft and Pennant Hills with original clay sewers, and 1980s–90s builds in Castle Hill and Baulkham Hills where PVC is starting to show its age.

Quick answer

Blocked drains in the Hills District are cleared the same day for $350–$650 / hour, including jetting and a camera check, with plumbers based in the area (usually the same day, 60–90 minutes for urgent jobs). The usual cause here: clay soil movement dropping and offsetting pipe joints. No call-out fee, same price nights and weekends, and a written report with the footage.

The shale and clay soils here move a lot through wet and dry seasons, which drops and offsets pipe joints over time — the classic setup for root intrusion and recurring blockages.

What goes wrong in the Hills District

Hills District homes on clay soil benefit from a camera check before any repair — the ground movement means a blockage at one spot often comes with a sagged section nearby.

“I run Hills District two or three times most weeks. It’s nearly always clay soil movement dropping and offsetting pipe joints — the blocks here are old and the trees have had decades to get in.”

We’re usually the same day, 60–90 minutes for urgent jobs from most of Hills District, so a same-day visit is the norm, not a favour. I’ll clear the block first, then put the camera down so you can see exactly what caused it — whether it’ll hold with a clean-out or whether the line needs relining. You get the footage and a written report, and the price range is published before I turn up.

Blocked drains Hills District: what we see most

Hills District residents call us about blocked drains more than any other plumbing problem, and the causes are local. The ground, the trees and the age of the houses give each Hills District suburb its own drain problems. A local plumber who works them every week reads the signs faster than someone from across town.

Hills District blocked drains are mostly a story about clay soil and big gardens, and Hills District plumbing services that only carry a cable rarely fix them for long. From Castle Hill and Baulkham Hills through Cherrybrook, West Pennant Hills and Beecroft to Dural, Glenhaven and Kellyville, the housing is 1960s to 1990s brick veneer on large blocks, with established gardens that have had thirty or forty years to send roots into the drains.

The soil across the Hills is reactive clay. It swells when it rains and shrinks in a dry spell, and that movement drops and offsets the joints in clay sewers and, on the older estates, in the first generation of PVC as well.

Once a joint is open, liquidambar, gum, jacaranda and camphor laurel roots find it. Root intrusion in both older clay and early PVC lines is the most common thing our camera finds under Hills homes.

The blocks slope, and the sewer usually runs a long way under a front lawn and a driveway to the street. That makes the Hills a relining district: a long run is expensive to dig and straightforward to reline, and the footage tells us which section actually needs it.

Roots find the joint first, then the crack. This is what a recurring blockage in an older Sydney home usually looks like on camera.

Suburb by suburb

Every part of the Hills District has its own drain problems. These are the ones we clear most often, and where our experienced plumbers spend most of their week.

Castle Hill and Baulkham Hills

1970s to 90s homes on clay lines under big lawns and driveways, and a newer apartment precinct near the metro on PVC with shared stacks. Roots in the houses; wipes and builder debris in the apartments.

Cherrybrook, West Pennant Hills and Beecroft

Leafy, sloping blocks with established gardens and older clay sewers. Ground movement offsets joints and stormwater lines fill with silt on the slopes.

Dural, Glenhaven and Kenthurst

Larger semi-rural blocks, some on septic and absorption trenches rather than sewer, with long stormwater runs and big trees. We check which system the house is on before anything else.

Kellyville, Rouse Hill and Bella Vista

Newer estates on PVC where the drains are fine and the problems are foreign objects, builder debris left in the line, and stormwater grates paved over during landscaping.

Winston Hills and Northmead

1960s brick on clay soil with the original earthenware sewers now well past their design life. Recurring blockages here are almost always roots at a dropped joint.

Drain clearing services across the Hills District

We are blocked drain specialists, not general plumbers. Every van in the Hills District carries the full kit: a high pressure jetter, a CCTV drain camera with a locator, an electric eel for foreign objects, and pipe relining gear.

The usual calls are slow drainage, gurgling sounds, overflowing drains and a kitchen sink that keeps backing up. We unblock drains properly. Powerful water jetters clear stubborn blockages from the whole pipe wall, where a cable only pokes a hole through. Then the camera checks the pipe condition and finds the root cause: tree root intrusion, grease, wipes or damaged pipework. Same day service across the Hills District, transparent pricing, and pipe relining as the long term solution when the footage shows the pipe is failing.

Drain Cleaning

$350–$650/Hour

Slow, gurgling or smelly drains cleaned back to the pipe wall, not just poked through.

Blocked Toilet

$250–$450

Cleared fast, with the cause checked — so it doesn’t happen again on a Sunday night.

Blocked Sewer

$450–$850

When the whole line is struggling — cleared, camera-checked, and fixed for good.

Stormwater Drains

$400–$750

Stop the yard flooding and the side path turning into a creek every time it rains.

CCTV Drain Inspection

$200–$400

See the inside of your pipes on a screen — before you spend a cent on a fix you might not need.

Hydro Jetting

$350–$650

High-pressure water that cuts through roots, grease and sludge — and actually cleans the pipe.

Stormwater on the Hills District

Hills stormwater lines silt up. The clay soil sheds water fast, and on the sloping blocks that water carries soil, mulch and leaves into pits and drains that then hold it wherever the pipe has a low spot. After a storm the yard floods, the downpipe backs up, or water runs across the driveway into the garage.

Newer estates have their own problem: landscaping. Grates get paved over, garden beds get built up above the top of a pit, and the stormwater system that was designed to take the roof water has nowhere to send it. Keeping grates exposed and the line jetted to the kerb is most of the answer.

How a job runs here

Our Hills District plumbers are based in the area, not at a depot across town, which is why arrival is usually the same day, 60–90 minutes for urgent jobs. Sewage backing up or a gully overflowing gets the emergency response; a slow shower gets a same-day or next-day booking at the same price. We do drains only, and refer gas, hot water and burst supply pipes.

Step 1

We clear it first

An electric eel or high-pressure water jetter breaks through the blockage so your drains flow again straight away.

Step 2

We put a camera down

A CCTV drain camera shows the inside of the pipe on a screen — where the roots, crack or collapse actually is.

Step 3

You see what we see

We record it and talk you through the footage in plain English, with no pressure to do anything on the spot.

Step 4

We give you the real fix

If it’s a one-off, you’re done. If the pipe is failing, we quote to reline or replace only the broken section.

What it costs in the Hills District

Published ranges, confirmed on site before work starts, with no call-out fee within the Hills District and the same price nights and weekends. Hills jobs move within the range on length: the sewer under a big front lawn and a wide driveway can be twenty or thirty metres, and a camera to the boundary is the only way to know which few metres are damaged. Relining that section is usually a fraction of digging the driveway; septic and absorption trench properties in Dural and Glenhaven are priced separately once we know what the house is on.

Repairs are a separate range from the footage: relining is a setup cost of about $2,500 plus $450 to $650 a metre, and a targeted excavation is roughly $1,500 to $5,000. Already been quoted? The checker on this page tells you line by line whether it is fair.

Preventing blocked drains in Hills District homes

With liquidambars, gums, jacarandas, camphor laurels and Chinese elms over old clay lines, most drainage problems on the Hills District are catchable early. Preventative maintenance is cheaper than costly repairs after a flood, and it stops future blockages; the routine below matters more than any product.

On clay soil, a jet clean and camera check every two years shows how the joints are moving before roots close the pipe.

Keep stormwater grates and pits exposed and above the level of surrounding garden beds; do not pave over them.

Keep new trees, particularly liquidambars and gums, well clear of the sewer and stormwater lines shown on the sewerage service diagram.

In the newer estates, keep wipes out of the toilet; PVC stacks block on wipes, not roots.

If the property is on septic, have the tank pumped on schedule and the trenches checked; a blocked absorption trench looks like a blocked drain.
