Blocked drains Sutherland Shire

The Shire has its own character — sandy soils near Cronulla and the beaches, heavier clay further inland at Sutherland and Engadine — and a lot of homes built in the 1950s to 70s with clay sewers now reaching the end of their life.

Quick answer

Blocked drains in the Sutherland Shire are cleared the same day for $350–$650 / hour, including jetting and a camera check, with plumbers based in the area (usually the same day, 60–90 minutes for urgent jobs). The usual cause here: sandy coastal soil shifting and dropping stormwater lines. No call-out fee, same price nights and weekends, and a written report with the footage.

The sandy coastal soil drains well but shifts, dropping stormwater pipes; inland, the clay and the native trees mean root blockages are the main call-out.

What goes wrong in the Sutherland Shire

Across the Shire we camera every recurring blockage — the mix of sandy soil and ageing clay means the obvious blockage is often a symptom of a dropped or root-filled section nearby.

“I run Sutherland Shire two or three times most weeks. It’s nearly always sandy coastal soil shifting and dropping stormwater lines — the blocks here are old and the trees have had decades to get in.”

We’re usually the same day, 60–90 minutes for urgent jobs from most of Sutherland Shire, so a same-day visit is the norm, not a favour. I’ll clear the block first, then put the camera down so you can see exactly what caused it — whether it’ll hold with a clean-out or whether the line needs relining. You get the footage and a written report, and the price range is published before I turn up.

Blocked drains Sutherland Shire: what we see most

Sutherland Shire residents call us about blocked drains more than any other plumbing problem, and the causes are local. The ground, the trees and the age of the houses give each Sutherland Shire suburb its own drain problems. A local plumber who works them every week reads the signs faster than someone from across town.

Blocked drains in the Sutherland Shire split neatly by distance from the water. Along the coast, in Cronulla, Woolooware, Caringbah South and Bundeena, the soil is sand, the air is salt, and the problems are dropped stormwater lines, sand in the drains and corroded fittings. Inland, through Miranda, Gymea, Kirrawee, Sutherland, Engadine and Menai, the soil is clay over sandstone, the trees are native gums and banksias, and the problem is roots in 1950s to 70s clay sewers reaching the end of their life.

The Shire was built out mostly after the war, so the housing is fibro, brick and brick veneer from the 1950s to the 1970s on original earthenware lines, with a lot of it now sixty or seventy years old. The blocks are generous, the gardens are established, and the native trees that make the Shire what it is send roots into every open joint.

Because the obvious blockage is often not the real one, a sand-filled trap in front of a root mass ten metres further on, for example, we camera every recurring blockage across the Shire before recommending a fix.

Roots find the joint first, then the crack. This is what a recurring blockage in an older Sydney home usually looks like on camera.

Suburb by suburb

Every part of the Sutherland Shire has its own drain problems. These are the ones we clear most often, and where our experienced plumbers spend most of their week.

Cronulla, Woolooware and Caringbah South

Sandy soil, salt air and beach traffic. Sand and hair in the bathroom drains, dropped stormwater lines that flood side paths in every storm, and corroded gullies and stacks under the older homes and apartment blocks.

Miranda, Gymea and Kirrawee

1950s to 70s brick and fibro on clay lines under gums and banksias. Recurring root blockages, long runs to the street and sandstone that makes digging expensive.

Sutherland, Engadine and Heathcote

Bushland blocks on sandstone with clay sewers and gum roots at most joints. Steep falls towards the national park mean deep lines that are far cheaper to reline than to dig.

Menai, Illawong and Bangor

Later 1970s and 80s estates, some on early PVC. Ground movement opens joints on the clay soil and roots follow; stormwater lines silt on the sloping blocks.

Bundeena, Maianbar and Grays Point

Coastal cottages on sand and sandstone, some on septic and absorption trenches. We check which system the house is on first; a failed trench looks like a blocked drain.

Drain clearing services across the Sutherland Shire

We are blocked drain specialists, not general plumbers. Every van in the Hills District carries the full kit: a high pressure jetter, a CCTV drain camera with a locator, an electric eel for foreign objects, and pipe relining gear.

The usual calls are slow drainage, gurgling sounds, overflowing drains and a kitchen sink that keeps backing up. We unblock drains properly. Powerful water jetters clear stubborn blockages from the whole pipe wall, where a cable only pokes a hole through. Then the camera checks the pipe condition and finds the root cause: tree root intrusion, grease, wipes or damaged pipework. Same day service across the Inner West, transparent pricing, and pipe relining as the long term solution when the footage shows the pipe is failing.

Drain Cleaning

$350–$650/Hour

Slow, gurgling or smelly drains cleaned back to the pipe wall, not just poked through.

Blocked Toilet

$250–$450

Cleared fast, with the cause checked — so it doesn’t happen again on a Sunday night.

Blocked Sewer

$450–$850

When the whole line is struggling — cleared, camera-checked, and fixed for good.

Stormwater Drains

$400–$750

Stop the yard flooding and the side path turning into a creek every time it rains.

CCTV Drain Inspection

$200–$400

See the inside of your pipes on a screen — before you spend a cent on a fix you might not need.

Hydro Jetting

$350–$650

High-pressure water that cuts through roots, grease and sludge — and actually cleans the pipe.

Stormwater on the Sutherland Shire

Shire stormwater lines fail in two ways. Near the coast, sandy coastal soil shifts and drops the pipe at a joint, sand washes in, and the line backs up at the first downpipe in heavy rain. Inland, on the sloping sandstone blocks, silt and leaves from the bush wash into pits and drains and settle wherever the pipe is flat.

Both show as water pooling in the yard, a flooded side path, or a downpipe gushing at the base. Both are jetted clear from the pit to the kerb, and the camera shows whether a joint has dropped and needs fixing or the line just needs keeping clean before each storm season.

How a job runs here

Our Sutherland Shire plumbers are based in the area, not at a depot across town, which is why arrival is usually the same day, 60–90 minutes for urgent jobs. Sewage backing up or a gully overflowing gets the emergency response; a slow shower gets a same-day or next-day booking at the same price. We do drains only, and refer gas, hot water and burst supply pipes.

Step 1

We clear it first

An electric eel or high-pressure water jetter breaks through the blockage so your drains flow again straight away.

Step 2

We put a camera down

A CCTV drain camera shows the inside of the pipe on a screen — where the roots, crack or collapse actually is.

Step 3

You see what we see

We record it and talk you through the footage in plain English, with no pressure to do anything on the spot.

Step 4

We give you the real fix

If it’s a one-off, you’re done. If the pipe is failing, we quote to reline or replace only the broken section.

What it costs in the Sutherland Shire

Published ranges, confirmed on site before work starts, with no call-out fee within the Sutherland Shire and the same price nights and weekends. Shire jobs move to the top of a range on sandstone and slope: a deep clay sewer on a bushland block in Engadine or Grays Point is expensive to dig and straightforward to reline. Near the coast, corroded cast iron and sand-filled stormwater add time to find the fault rather than fix it. Septic properties in Bundeena and Maianbar are priced once we know what the house is on.

Repairs are a separate range from the footage: relining is a setup cost of about $2,500 plus $450 to $650 a metre, and a targeted excavation is roughly $1,500 to $5,000. Already been quoted? The checker on this page tells you line by line whether it is fair.

Preventing blocked drains in Sutherland Shire homes

With gums, coastal banksias, paperbarks and figs over old clay lines, most drainage problems on the Sutherland Shire are catchable early. Preventative maintenance is cheaper than costly repairs after a flood, and it stops future blockages; the routine below matters more than any product.

Near the beach, fit strainers in every shower and floor drain; sand and hair are the most common cause of blocked bathroom drains in Cronulla.

On sandy blocks, have stormwater lines jetted and cameraed every couple of years; a dropped joint fills with sand quietly until the first east-coast low.

On clay soil under gums and banksias, a jet clean and camera check of the sewer every one to two years catches roots before they close the pipe.

Keep grates and pits clear of leaves and bark from the bush before storm season.

If the property is on septic, keep the tank pumped on schedule and the trench area clear of traffic and trees.
