Blocked drains Northern Beaches
The Northern Beaches is full of beautiful older homes — Federation and Californian bungalows in places like Manly, Fairlight, Seaforth and Mona Vale — and most of them still run on the original clay sewer lines.

Quick answer
Blocked drains in the Northern Beaches are cleared the same day for $350–$650 / hour, including jetting and a camera check, with plumbers based in the area (usually the same day, 60–90 minutes for urgent jobs). The usual cause here: tree roots in clay sewers — the big problem on almost every older block. No call-out fee, same price nights and weekends, and a written report with the footage.
Between the sandy soil near the coast, the heavy clay soil further inland, and the mature trees every older block seems to have, root intrusion is the number one drain problem we’re called to across the Beaches.

What goes wrong in the Northern Beaches
Most Northern Beaches call-outs are root blockages in pre-1980s clay sewers. Clearing is the same day; we camera every recurring one so you know whether it’s a one-off or a section that needs relining.
Tree roots in clay sewers — the big problem on almost every older block
Sandy soil near the coast shifting and dropping stormwater pipes
Salt air ageing older cast-iron and galvanised fittings faste
Steep blocks in places like Balgowlah and Seaforth where the sewer runs a long way downhill

“I run Northern Beaches two or three times most weeks. It’s nearly always tree roots in clay sewers — the big problem on almost every older block — the blocks here are old and the trees have had decades to get in.”
We’re usually the same day, 60–90 minutes for urgent jobs from most of Northern Beaches, so a same-day visit is the norm, not a favour. I’ll clear the block first, then put the camera down so you can see exactly what caused it — whether it’ll hold with a clean-out or whether the line needs relining. You get the footage and a written report, and the price range is published before I turn up.

Blocked drains Northern Beaches: what we see most
Northern Beaches residents call us about blocked drains more than any other plumbing problem, and the causes are local. The ground, the trees and the age of the houses give each Northern Beaches suburb its own drain problems. A local plumber who works them every week reads the signs faster than someone from across town.
Blocked drains on the Northern Beaches come from two very different kinds of ground. Along the coast, from Manly through Dee Why to Palm Beach, the soil is sand: it drains fast, it shifts, and it lets old stormwater and sewer lines drop at the joints until they hold water and silt. Inland, through Frenchs Forest, Forestville and the ridge suburbs, the soil is heavy clay over sandstone, which swells and shrinks with the seasons and opens every joint in a clay sewer.
Over both sits the same housing: Federation and Californian bungalows, 1950s brick homes and 1960s project houses on original earthenware sewer lines, under gums, paperbarks, jacarandas and the Norfolk pines that line the beachfront streets. Tree root intrusion at the joints of those lines is the single most common drain problem we clear across the Northern Beaches area, and it is why a cheap cable-clear on the Beaches tends to be back within the year.
Salt air adds a third factor near the water. Cast iron and galvanised fittings under older Manly and Fairlight homes corrode faster than the same fittings ten kilometres inland, and a corroded stack or gully is where roots and sand get in.

Roots find the joint first, then the crack. This is what a recurring blockage in an older Sydney home usually looks like on camera.
Drain clearing services across the Northern Beaches
Every part of the Northern Beaches has its own drain problems. These are the ones we clear most often, and where our experienced plumbers spend most of their week.
Manly, Fairlight and Balgowlah
Federation homes on the hill on aged clay sewers with long, steep runs down to the harbour, and older apartment blocks around the Corso with shared stacks. Roots on the hill, sand and hair in the beachside units, and a lot of long sewer runs that are ideal for relining rather than digging.
Seaforth, Clontarf and Balgowlah Heights
Big blocks, big trees and steep drops to Middle Harbour. The sewer often runs a long way downhill under the garden, and a collapsed section can be deep. We camera and locate before anyone talks about excavation here.
Dee Why, Brookvale and Narrabeen
Flatter, sandier and busier. Stormwater drains silt up and back up in heavy rain on the low-lying streets near the lagoon, and the commercial kitchens along Pittwater Road put grease into shared lines.
Mona Vale, Newport and Avalon
Older beach cottages next to new builds. The cottages are on clay lines under coastal banksias and gums; the new homes are PVC, where the trouble is builder debris and wipes. Sandy soil drops stormwater pipes here more than anywhere else on the Beaches.
Frenchs Forest and Forestville
1960s and 70s homes on clay soil with established gardens. Ground movement opens joints, liquidambar and gum roots follow, and the long runs to the street make relining the sensible fix.
Drain clearing services across the Northern Beaches
We are blocked drain specialists, not general plumbers. Every van in the Northern Beaches carries the full kit: a high pressure jetter, a CCTV drain camera with a locator, an electric eel for foreign objects, and pipe relining gear.
The usual calls are slow drainage, gurgling sounds, overflowing drains and a kitchen sink that keeps backing up. We unblock drains properly. Powerful water jetters clear stubborn blockages from the whole pipe wall, where a cable only pokes a hole through. Then the camera checks the pipe condition and finds the root cause: tree root intrusion, grease, wipes or damaged pipework. Same day service across the Northern Beaches, transparent pricing, and pipe relining as the long term solution when the footage shows the pipe is failing.
Drain Cleaning
$350–$650/Hour
Slow, gurgling or smelly drains cleaned back to the pipe wall, not just poked through.
Blocked Toilet
$250–$450
Cleared fast, with the cause checked — so it doesn’t happen again on a Sunday night.
Blocked Sewer
$450–$850
When the whole line is struggling — cleared, camera-checked, and fixed for good.
Stormwater Drains
$400–$750
Stop the yard flooding and the side path turning into a creek every time it rains.
Stormwater on the Northern Beaches
Stormwater is a bigger part of the work on the Northern Beaches than in most of Sydney. East-coast lows drop a lot of water on the Beaches in a short time, and the sandy streets around Narrabeen, Dee Why and Collaroy sit close to the lagoons and the water table. A stormwater drain that has dropped at a joint or filled with sand backs up at the first downpipe, and the water ends up against the house or through the subfloor.
Leaf and garden debris from the Norfolk pines, paperbarks and gums block grates and pits during heavy rains. Grate channel drains across driveways, stormwater pits in the yard and subsoil or French drains behind retaining walls all need to be kept clear, and a jet clean of the line to the kerb before storm season is the cheapest insurance on the Beaches. Effective stormwater management here is what prevents soil erosion on the sloping blocks and structural damage to the house below.
How a job runs here
Our Northern Beaches plumbers are based in the area, not at a depot across town, which is why arrival is usually the same day, 60–90 minutes for urgent jobs. Sewage backing up or a gully overflowing gets the emergency response; a slow shower gets a same-day or next-day booking at the same price. We do drains only, and refer gas, hot water and burst supply pipes.
Step 1
We clear it first
An electric eel or high-pressure water jetter breaks through the blockage so your drains flow again straight away.
Step 2
We put a camera down
A CCTV drain camera shows the inside of the pipe on a screen — where the roots, crack or collapse actually is.
What it costs in the Northern Beaches
Published ranges, confirmed on site before work starts, with no call-out fee within the Northern Beaches and the same price nights and weekends. Two things push Northern Beaches jobs towards the top of a range: steep blocks in Seaforth, Balgowlah Heights and Clontarf where the sewer runs deep and a long way downhill, and sandstone under the inland suburbs where any excavation is slow. Both are reasons relining is usually the better-value repair on the Beaches, and the camera tells us which applies before anything is priced.
Repairs are a separate range from the footage: relining is a setup cost of about $2,500 plus $450 to $650 a metre, and a targeted excavation is roughly $1,500 to $5,000. Already been quoted? The checker on this page tells you line by line whether it is fair.

Preventing blocked drains in Northern Beaches homes
With gums, paperbarks, jacarandas, coastal banksias and Norfolk pines over old clay lines, most drainage problems on the Northern Beaches are catchable early. Preventative maintenance is cheaper than costly repairs after a flood, and it stops future blockages; the routine below matters more than any product.
Keep grates, pits and gutters clear of pine needles and leaves before every storm season; the Beaches gets more water in an hour than most of Sydney gets in a week.
On sandy blocks near the lagoons and the beach, have stormwater lines jetted and cameraed every couple of years; sand fills a dropped joint quietly until the first big storm.
Fit a drain strainer in every shower and sink. Sand and hair from the beach are the number one cause of blocked bathroom drains in Manly and Dee Why units.
If the house is pre-1980s on the hill, a jet clean and camera check of the clay sewer every one to two years catches gum and jacaranda roots before they close the pipe.
Only paper down the toilet. Wet wipes and sanitary products block the shared stacks in older apartment blocks and the whole building pays.
