Blocked drains North Shore

The North Shore — from Lane Cove and Artarmon through to Roseville, Lindfield and Wahroonga — is classic older-Sydney territory.

Quick answer

Blocked drains in the North Shore are cleared the same day for $350–$650 / hour, including jetting and a camera check, with plumbers based in the area (usually the same day, 45–90 minutes for urgent jobs). The usual cause here: mature trees (jacarandas, camphor laurels, paperbarks) invading clay sewers. No call-out fee, same price nights and weekends, and a written report with the footage.

It’s the part of Sydney where we do the most sewer relining. The combination of mature trees and shifting clay soil means roots find their way into almost every original line eventually.

What goes wrong in the North Shore

On the North Shore we almost always recommend a CCTV inspection before any fix — the trees and the clay soil mean the visible blockage is rarely the only problem along the line.

Mature trees (jacarandas, camphor laurels, paperbarks) invading clay sewers

Clay soil expanding and contracting with wet and dry seasons, opening pipe joints

Original earthenware lines reaching the end of their 50–60 year life

“I run North Shore two or three times most weeks. It’s nearly always mature trees (jacarandas, camphor laurels, paperbarks) invading clay sewers — the blocks here are old and the trees have had decades to get in.”

We’re usually the same day, 45–90 minutes for urgent jobs from most of North Shore, so a same-day visit is the norm, not a favour. I’ll clear the block first, then put the camera down so you can see exactly what caused it — whether it’ll hold with a clean-out or whether the line needs relining. You get the footage and a written report, and the price range is published before I turn up.

Blocked drains North Shore: what we see most

North Shore residents call us about blocked drains more than any other plumbing problem, and the causes are local. The ground, the trees and the age of the houses give each North Shore suburb its own drain problems. A local plumber who works them every week reads the signs faster than someone from across town.

The North Shore has the oldest trees and the oldest clay sewers in Sydney in the same streets, which is why a North Shore blocked drain is, more than anywhere else we work, a tree root problem. From Lane Cove and Artarmon up through Roseville, Lindfield, Killara, Gordon, Pymble and Turramurra to Wahroonga and Hornsby, the housing is Federation, inter-war and 1950s brick on large, leafy blocks, and almost all of it still runs on the original earthenware sewer lines laid when the house was built.

The soil is heavy clay over Hawkesbury sandstone. Clay swells in a wet winter and shrinks in a dry summer, and every cycle opens the joints in a clay pipe a little further. Jacarandas, camphor laurels, liquidambars, brush box and the big street figs and gums send roots into every open joint, and a root mass that was a few hairs in spring is a full blockage by the following autumn.

The blocks are long, the sewers run a long way to the street, often downhill through the garden and under a driveway, and the sandstone makes digging slow and expensive. That combination is why we camera every recurring blockage on the North Shore before recommending anything, and why relining rather than excavation is the usual answer when the footage shows damage.

Roots find the joint first, then the crack. This is what a recurring blockage in an older Sydney home usually looks like on camera.

Suburb by suburb

Every part of the North Shore has its own drain problems. These are the ones we clear most often, and where our experienced plumbers spend most of their week.

Turramurra, Wahroonga and Warrawee

The busiest North Shore suburbs for blocked and collapsed sewers. Big bushland blocks, steep falls towards the national park, long terracotta runs and gum roots at most joints. Long runs that are expensive to dig and ideal to reline.

Pymble, Gordon, Killara and Lindfield

Grand inter-war homes on deep blocks under jacarandas and liquidambars. Clay soil movement and roots open the joints; stormwater from big roofs overwhelms old pits in storms.

Chatswood, Willoughby and Artarmon

Federation streets on original clay east of the Pacific Highway, and grease in the shared lines around the Chatswood restaurant precinct. Newer apartments near the station are PVC with shared stacks, where wipes are the problem.

Lane Cove, Greenwich and Wollstonecraft

Harbourside blocks with steep drops and long, deep sewer runs to the street. Camphor laurel and fig roots, and sandstone close to the surface, make excavation a last resort.

Hornsby, Waitara and Normanhurst

1960s to 80s homes on bushland blocks with terracotta lines and gum roots at every joint, plus apartments near the station. Sandstone under the line makes a reline far cheaper than a dig.

Drain clearing services across the North Shore

We are blocked drain specialists, not general plumbers. Every van in the North Shore carries the full kit: a high pressure jetter, a CCTV drain camera with a locator, an electric eel for foreign objects, and pipe relining gear.

The usual calls are slow drainage, gurgling sounds, overflowing drains and a kitchen sink that keeps backing up. We unblock drains properly. Powerful water jetters clear stubborn blockages from the whole pipe wall, where a cable only pokes a hole through. Then the camera checks the pipe condition and finds the root cause: tree root intrusion, grease, wipes or damaged pipework. Same day service across the North Shore, transparent pricing, and pipe relining as the long term solution when the footage shows the pipe is failing.

Drain Cleaning

$350–$650/Hour

Slow, gurgling or smelly drains cleaned back to the pipe wall, not just poked through.

Blocked Toilet

$250–$450

Cleared fast, with the cause checked — so it doesn’t happen again on a Sunday night.

Blocked Sewer

$450–$850

When the whole line is struggling — cleared, camera-checked, and fixed for good.

Stormwater Drains

$400–$750

Stop the yard flooding and the side path turning into a creek every time it rains.

CCTV Drain Inspection

$200–$400

See the inside of your pipes on a screen — before you spend a cent on a fix you might not need.

Hydro Jetting

$350–$650

High-pressure water that cuts through roots, grease and sludge — and actually cleans the pipe.

Stormwater on the North Shore

North Shore stormwater problems are about volume and leaves. Big roofs, big trees and long driveways send a lot of water and a lot of debris into stormwater pits and drains that were sized decades ago. Liquidambar and jacaranda leaves block grates and downpipe tops every autumn, and the clay soil means the water has nowhere to soak away when a pipe backs up.

On the sloping blocks in Lindfield, Killara and Lane Cove, a blocked stormwater line sends water across the neighbour’s boundary or against the house below. Keeping grates clear, jetting the line to the kerb before winter and cameraing any pit that floods twice is the routine that prevents it.

How a job runs here

Our North Shore plumbers are based in the area, not at a depot across town, which is why arrival is usually the same day, 45–90 minutes for urgent jobs. Sewage backing up or a gully overflowing gets the emergency response; a slow shower gets a same-day or next-day booking at the same price. We do drains only, and refer gas, hot water and burst supply pipes.

Step 1

We clear it first

An electric eel or high-pressure water jetter breaks through the blockage so your drains flow again straight away.

Step 2

We put a camera down

A CCTV drain camera shows the inside of the pipe on a screen — where the roots, crack or collapse actually is.

Step 3

You see what we see

We record it and talk you through the footage in plain English, with no pressure to do anything on the spot.

Step 4

We give you the real fix

If it’s a one-off, you’re done. If the pipe is failing, we quote to reline or replace only the broken section.

What it costs in the North Shore

Published ranges, confirmed on site before work starts, with no call-out fee within the North Shore and the same price nights and weekends. North Shore jobs sit towards the top of a range when the sewer is long, deep and under a driveway, which is common, and when sandstone is close to the surface, which is also common. Both make excavation expensive and both are why a two or three metre reline at the point where the roots came in is usually the right fix rather than a dig.

Repairs are a separate range from the footage: relining is a setup cost of about $2,500 plus $450 to $650 a metre, and a targeted excavation is roughly $1,500 to $5,000. Already been quoted? The checker on this page tells you line by line whether it is fair.

Preventing blocked drains in North Shore homes

With jacarandas, camphor laurels, liquidambars, brush box, figs and gums over old clay lines, most drainage problems on the North Shore are catchable early. Preventative maintenance is cheaper than costly repairs after a flood, and it stops future blockages; the routine below matters more than any product.

If the house is pre-1980s, assume the sewer is clay and book a jet clean and camera check every one to two years. On the North Shore this is the single most cost-effective thing a homeowner can do.

Keep new plantings, especially figs, liquidambars and jacarandas, well away from the sewer line; the sewerage service diagram shows where it runs.

Clear grates, pits and gutters of leaves every autumn and before storm season.

Keep fats and oils out of the kitchen sink and wipes out of the toilet; on a long clay run they catch on every joint.

If a drain has blocked twice, get it cameraed rather than cleared a third time. The footage shows whether a short reline ends it.
