Quick answer

Blocked sewer clearing in Sydney costs $450–$850, including jetting, root cutting and CCTV to the boundary. If relining is needed, expect around $2,500 setup, with $450–$650 per metre. We do not charge any call-out fee in our service areas and same-day service is available.

We use professional equipment to clear blockages, including high-pressure water jetting and root-cutting equipment where required. Once the flow is restored, we put the CCTV camera down the drain again and suggest the next steps.

Signs you’ve got this problem

If these signs are happening together, the issue may be in the main line:

Multiple fixtures backing up at the same time

A blocked toilet alongside slow bathroom or laundry drains

Gurgling from the toilet when appliances like washing machines are used

A wet or unusually green patch of lawn above the sewer line

Sewage smells around the house or outside gully

Recurring blockage after clearing

How we sort it

We follow four steps to clear the blockage, inspect the pipe and work out what needs to be done next.

Step 1

Restore the flow

High-pressure water jetting breaks through suitable obstructions, washes accumulated material from the pipe, and restores flow on the same day.

Step 2

Inspect the line with CCTV

Once the line is flowing, we use CCTV drain inspections to look inside the pipe and analyse the issues.

Step 3

Locate the problem

Where further repair work is required, a locator can help identify the position and depth of a damaged section from the surface.

Step 4

Explain your repair options

If the footage shows damaged sections, significant root intrusion or a collapsed pipe, we explain whether pipe relining, targeted replacement or another approach is appropriate.

Is It a Sewer Main Blockage or a Local Drain?

Be it toilets, showers, or drains, every fixture in your home connects to the main sewer line, which carries the sewage away from your property. If the main sewer is blocked, all the fixtures get affected. For example, you might hear gurgling sounds when you turn the shower on, or notice water backing up while the washing machine is in use or you might see wastewater escape from the relief gully. These signs may seem unrelated, but are all symptoms of a blocked sewer line.

You may also notice:

A toilet that gurgles when the washing machine drains
Water rising through a floor drain
A sewage smell around an outside gully
A soggy or unusually green section of lawn
Several drains becoming slower over a short period
An outside gully overflowing even when water isn’t being used inside

If you notice any of these signs, avoid flushing or using water and call us without any delay.

Roots find the joint first, then the crack. This is what a recurring blockage in an older Sydney home usually looks like on camera.

What Causes Sewer Blockages in Sydney?

In older Sydney properties from the 1980s, the age and condition of the pipe can be an important factor. Many older Sydney properties have clay earthenware sewer pipes, often made from shorter sections joined along the drainage line. As these systems age, joints can shift or develop openings that allow roots to enter.

Tree roots are a common cause of sewer problems in our service areas such as North Shore, the Northern Beaches, the Inner West and the Shire. This is where older pipes have open joints or cracks. Tree root intrusion can begin with a small root entering through a joint before gradually creating a larger obstruction.

Kitchen wastewater can carry grease, oil and food residue into the drainage system. Over time, this material can stick to the inside of the pipe and reduce the available flow.

Wet wipes, sanitary items and other foreign objects also lead to blockage.

Some blockages are symptoms of a damaged pipe rather than the primary problem. Cracks, displaced joints, collapsed sections or a belly in the pipe can interrupt flow and allow root intrusion. During heavy rain, water entering a damaged sewer or an incorrectly connected system can put additional pressure on the drainage network and contribute to sewer backups.

What you should expect from any blocked drain plumber

How We Clear a Blocked Sewer

We approach a blocked sewer differently from a small household clog. Where access allows, we work from an external inspection opening or overflow relief gully rather than bringing unnecessary mess through the house.

High-pressure water is directed through the line using specialised equipment. Water jetting can wash away accumulated sludge, grease and other suitable material while restoring flow and is more effective than eels.

Where roots are involved, a root-cutting attachment can break through the root mass and flush the material towards the main. For objects or blockages a jetter cannot effectively remove, mechanical clearing equipment may be used.

If the blockage cannot be cleared because the pipe has collapsed or is severely damaged, we’ll explain the problem clearly.

Once the sewer is flowing, a CCTV drain inspection can show the condition of the line. The camera and locator can identify the cause and affected section, with footage, still images and a short report available where required. This gives you useful information when deciding whether to continue with drain clearing or consider permanent repair work.

How Much Does a Blocked Sewer Cost in Sydney?

Our published range to clear a blocked sewer main is $450–$850. This includes jetting the main line, using a root cutter where needed, and a CCTV camera inspection through to the boundary. If the inspection identifies damaged pipework, repair costs are separate from the initial clearing. Pipe relining is typically around $2,500 for setup, plus $450–$650 per metre.

A collapsed section that requires digging and replacement can cost approximately $1,500–$5,000 depending on depth and access. If additional repair work is needed, we’ll explain the likely cost while showing you the footage before proceeding. We try to complete the work within 2 hours and do not charge any call-out fee in our service areas.

Is the Sewer Blockage Your Responsibility or Sydney Water’s?

Knowing who is responsible for a sewer problem can save you from paying for work that belongs to the public network. Private wastewater drainage on the property side of the relevant connection is generally the property owner’s responsibility, while Sydney Water manages its public wastewater network.

If the private line is clear through to the boundary but the problem appears to be further into the public network, we’ll explain and direct you to Sydney Water rather than recommending private repairs that aren’t required.

If the blockage is on the private side, we can the CCTV footage  and discuss the appropriate next step. This is particularly important where neighbours are also experiencing sewer problems. If several properties are affected, the issue may be further along the public sewer.

The Equipment We Use to Clear Sewer Blockages

A main sewer blockage requires more than household plungers or improvised DIY methods. Our drain specialists use tools designed for larger drainage problems, including high-pressure jetting equipment, root-cutting heads, electric eels and CCTV cameras with locators. We also carry suitable equipments to open the inspection and access points without digging. Our team consists of licensed plumbers who have the expertise to work on drains in NSW.

The visit begins with an assessment of the affected drains, fixtures and available access points. We then select the equipment suited to the type and location of the blockage. CCTV footage can provide visual evidence when further investigation is needed. It helps us get to the source of the issues and give upfront quotes before starting the work.

When DIY Drain Clearing Isn’t Enough

A plunger may help with a minor local blockage, but it cannot diagnose a damaged sewer pipe or deal with tree roots growing through a pipe joint. Baking soda could be effective for only minor clogs in bathrooms. Likewise, repeatedly using chemicals or pouring boiling hot water and dishwashing liquid into an old drainage system is not a solution for a main sewer blockage.

Stop attempting DIY clearing when:

More than one fixture is affected
Sewage is backing up
The outside gully is overflowing
The blockage has returned several times
You can hear gurgling from different fixtures
The blockage does not respond to basic clearing

Professional clearing and CCTV inspection can show whether you’re dealing with a simple blockage or a deeper drainage problem and the right requirements required.

After relining: a smooth new pipe cured inside the old one, with no trench through the garden.

Blocked Sewer or Blocked Stormwater?

Sewer and stormwater problems can look similar from outside the property, but are essentially different, though the symptom might be water backing up in your yard. If water only appears during rain, and your toilets, showers and sinks continue working normally, the problem may be with stormwater drainage.

A sewer problem is more likely when wastewater backs up during dry weather and several internal fixtures are affected. Because multiple fixtures discharge into the wastewater system, a blockage in the main sewer line can cause several of them to back up at the same time.

In older properties, incorrect connections can also allow stormwater into the sewer during heavy rain. A CCTV inspection can help identify whether the problem is within the private sewer line or further along the network.

What to Do While You Wait for a Plumber

Avoid flushing the toilet repeatedly.

Don’t run the washing machine or dishwasher.

Keep children and pets away from sewage or contaminated water.

Don’t pour chemicals, bleach or boiling water into the system.

If sewage has entered the property, take photographs of the affected area to claim insurance.

Identify the inspection opening so that you can guide the plumbers when they arrive.

When Does Your Sewer Pipe Need Relining?

When a sewer pipe has damage but is not beyond repair, pipe relining can provide an alternative to traditional excavation. We generally suggest relining when clay pipes face tree root intrusion. The damaged section is first cleaned and cleared. Roots and other material are removed so the pipe wall is ready for the liner.

A resin liner is then installed inside the existing pipe and cured to create a new internal pipe. Because the repair takes place inside the existing line, there is no need to excavate the entire route.

Pipe relining is not suitable for every situation. A severely collapsed pipe, incorrect pipe fall or another major structural problem may require targeted replacement and excavation. We inspect the pipe first and then discuss the options accordingly.

Sewer Blockages in Older Sydney Homes

Older Sydney properties can have drainage systems with older clay sewer pipes with rubber-ring or cement joints that develop cracks. Tree roots can find their way inside and create recurring blockages. If you’ve had the same sewer cleared several times, temporary cleaning may not address the underlying problem.

A CCTV inspection can show whether you’re dealing with root growth, a damaged section or another drainage issue. Once the cause is visible, you can decide whether continued maintenance or a long-term solution like relining is appropriate.
