Quick answer

Blocked drains in the Inner West are cleared the same day for $350–$650 / hour, including jetting and a camera check, with plumbers based in the area (usually the same day, 45–75 minutes for urgent jobs). The usual cause here: century-old earthenware sewers well past their design life. No call-out fee, same price nights and weekends, and a written report with the footage.

Many homes here still have the original earthenware sewers laid over a century ago. Combined with narrow blocks, shared terraces, and big street trees, the Inner West is ground zero for recurring root blockages.

What goes wrong in the Inner West

Inner West terraces and cottages almost always need a CCTV inspection before any fix — the lines are old, shared, and run under walls, so we map exactly where the problem is before anyone digs.

“I run Inner West two or three times most weeks. It’s nearly always century-old earthenware sewers well past their design life — the blocks here are old and the trees have had decades to get in.”

We’re usually the same day, 45–75 minutes for urgent jobs from most of Inner West, so a same-day visit is the norm, not a favour. I’ll clear the block first, then put the camera down so you can see exactly what caused it — whether it’ll hold with a clean-out or whether the line needs relining. You get the footage and a written report, and the price range is published before I turn up.

Blocked drains Inner West: what we see most

Inner West residents call us about blocked drains more than any other plumbing problem, and the causes are local. The ground, the trees and the age of the houses give each Inner West suburb its own drain problems. A local plumber who works them every week reads the signs faster than someone from across town.

Inner West blocked drains are a century-old-pipe problem, and Inner West blocked drain plumbers who know the streets are worth more than any amount of equipment. The terraces and workers’ cottages of Balmain, Rozelle, Annandale, Leichhardt, Newtown, Enmore, Stanmore and Marrickville were plumbed between the 1880s and the 1920s on earthenware sewers that are now well past any design life, and a surprising number of them are still in service under shared walls, narrow side paths and back lanes.

The blocks are narrow and the sewers are shared. A single line often collects three or four terraces before it reaches the street, so one blockage backs up several houses and the argument about whose pipe it is starts before the plumber arrives. Street trees, the big figs and plane trees the councils planted a century ago, send roots under footings and into every joint, and the older combined sewer and stormwater arrangements in the oldest streets no longer meet modern standards.

Further out, in Ashfield, Summer Hill, Haberfield and Dulwich Hill, the housing is Federation and inter-war on larger blocks, still on clay, with the same roots and the same open joints but usually with an easier path to the street. Across all of it the rule is the same: camera first, because the lines are old, shared, and run where you cannot see them.

The blocks slope, and the sewer usually runs a long way under a front lawn and a driveway to the street. That makes the Hills a relining district: a long run is expensive to dig and straightforward to reline, and the footage tells us which section actually needs it.

Roots find the joint first, then the crack. This is what a recurring blockage in an older Sydney home usually looks like on camera.

Suburb by suburb

Every part of the Hills District has its own drain problems. These are the ones we clear most often, and where our experienced plumbers spend most of their week.

Balmain, Rozelle and Lilyfield

Sandstone terraces on steep peninsula streets with sewers running under shared walls and down to the harbour. Fig roots, corroded cast iron under the houses, and lines that are hard to access without a camera and locator.

Annandale, Leichhardt and Petersham

Federation terraces and semis on original clay. Plane tree and fig roots from the street, shared lines through back lanes, and stormwater that was never separated from the sewer on the oldest blocks.

Newtown, Enmore and Stanmore

The densest terrace streets in Sydney. Shared sewers, grease from the King Street restaurants in the commercial lines, and narrow blocks where the only access is a gully under a paved courtyard.

Marrickville and Dulwich Hill

Cottages and warehouses converted to apartments, on clay and early cast iron. Roots in the cottages; shared stacks and wipes in the conversions.

Ashfield, Summer Hill and Haberfield

Larger Federation homes on leafy blocks. Long clay runs under gardens and driveways, jacaranda and camphor laurel roots, and old stormwater pits that flood in storms.

Drain clearing services across the Inner West

We are blocked drain specialists, not general plumbers. Every van in the Hills District carries the full kit: a high pressure jetter, a CCTV drain camera with a locator, an electric eel for foreign objects, and pipe relining gear.

The usual calls are slow drainage, gurgling sounds, overflowing drains and a kitchen sink that keeps backing up. We unblock drains properly. Powerful water jetters clear stubborn blockages from the whole pipe wall, where a cable only pokes a hole through. Then the camera checks the pipe condition and finds the root cause: tree root intrusion, grease, wipes or damaged pipework. Same day service across the Inner West, transparent pricing, and pipe relining as the long term solution when the footage shows the pipe is failing.

Drain Cleaning

$350–$650/Hour

Slow, gurgling or smelly drains cleaned back to the pipe wall, not just poked through.

Blocked Toilet

$250–$450

Cleared fast, with the cause checked — so it doesn’t happen again on a Sunday night.

Blocked Sewer

$450–$850

When the whole line is struggling — cleared, camera-checked, and fixed for good.

Stormwater Drains

$400–$750

Stop the yard flooding and the side path turning into a creek every time it rains.

CCTV Drain Inspection

$200–$400

See the inside of your pipes on a screen — before you spend a cent on a fix you might not need.

Hydro Jetting

$350–$650

High-pressure water that cuts through roots, grease and sludge — and actually cleans the pipe.

Stormwater on the Inner West

Inner West stormwater is complicated by age. Many terraces were built before the sewer and stormwater were separate systems, and a downpipe plumbed into the sewer decades ago is still there. In heavy rain the sewer surcharges, the gully overflows and the bathroom backs up; on a dry day everything works. The camera finds the connection, and separating it is the fix.

Where the stormwater is separate, the problems are paved courtyards with a single small grate, back-lane drains full of leaves, and old pits that silt up. A jet clean to the street before storm season and a grate that is actually clear solve most of it.

How a job runs here

Our Inner West plumbers are based in the area, not at a depot across town, which is why arrival is usually the same day, 45–75 minutes for urgent jobs. Sewage backing up or a gully overflowing gets the emergency response; a slow shower gets a same-day or next-day booking at the same price. We do drains only, and refer gas, hot water and burst supply pipes.

Step 1

We clear it first

An electric eel or high-pressure water jetter breaks through the blockage so your drains flow again straight away.

Step 2

We put a camera down

A CCTV drain camera shows the inside of the pipe on a screen — where the roots, crack or collapse actually is.

Step 3

You see what we see

We record it and talk you through the footage in plain English, with no pressure to do anything on the spot.

Step 4

We give you the real fix

If it’s a one-off, you’re done. If the pipe is failing, we quote to reline or replace only the broken section.

What it costs in the Inner West

Published ranges, confirmed on site before work starts, with no call-out fee within the Inner West and the same price nights and weekends. Inner West jobs move on access more than length. A gully under a paved courtyard, a sewer under a shared wall or a neighbour’s path, and cast iron under the floor all add time to find and reach the line, and excavation in a terrace is rarely practical. Relining through the existing access is almost always the repair here, and the camera and locator are what make it possible.

Repairs are a separate range from the footage: relining is a setup cost of about $2,500 plus $450 to $650 a metre, and a targeted excavation is roughly $1,500 to $5,000. Already been quoted? The checker on this page tells you line by line whether it is fair.

Preventing blocked drains in Inner West homes

With figs, plane trees, jacarandas and camphor laurels over old clay lines, most drainage problems on the Inner West are catchable early. Preventative maintenance is cheaper than costly repairs after a flood, and it stops future blockages; the routine below matters more than any product.

Find out whether your sewer is shared and where it runs; the sewerage service diagram from Sydney Water shows it, and it changes who pays when it blocks.

Keep grease out of the sink. On a shared terrace line, one kitchen’s fat blocks four houses.

Only paper down the toilet; wipes in a hundred-year-old shared sewer are a whole-lane problem.

If the bathroom backs up only when it rains, get the line cameraed for a stormwater connection into the sewer.

Keep the courtyard grate clear and the back-lane drain swept; a single blocked grate floods a terrace kitchen.
